That the City Council, at their regular meeting of March -19, 1990, approve the Public
Works Department's recommendations on tree removal requests, which are more
specifically as follows:

BACKROUND:
Attached, as an exhibit, is a list of tree removal requests which were received by the
Public Works Department through February 28, 1990. The requests are for the
removal of trees located in the public right of way.
Each location has been investigated by a member of the City's tree maintenance staff.
Staff has rendered a recommendation, prepared cost estimates, and in residential areas,
surveyed adjacent property owners to assess neighborhood opinion. This information is
contained in the specific request tabulated in the attached e::hibit.
Trees approved for removal, by Council, shall be removed and replaced by City crews.
Replacements will be with a tree of acceptable species from the City's approved tree list.

TREE REMOVAL REQUESTS
APPLICANT: Ms. Judy Wade

REQUEST: That the City remove one Podocarpuus, tree, in the parkway, at City expense.
STAFF EVALUATION: A large healthy Podocarpus tree causing no damage to City or private
improvements at this time.
NEIGHBOR RESPONSE: YES/2 NO/1 NO REPLY/2
RECOMMENDATION: That the request be denied and the City "Root Prune" along the sidewalk
side of the tree to prevent any future damage that may occur.
ESTIMATED COST: The estimated cost to Root Prune is $100.00.
APPLICANT: Ms. Cindy Speer

REQUEST: That the City remove one large Ficus Nitida tree in the parkway at City expense.
STAFF EVALUATION: A large Ficus Nitida tree that has outgrown the parkway. The sidewalk
has already been replaced.
NEIGHBOR RESPONSE: YES/3 NO/0 NO REPLY/2
RECOMMENDATION: That the request for removal be approved and the Ficus Nitida be
replaced with a Magnolia tree in a Root Barrier Box.
ESTIMATED COST: The estimated cost to remove the Ficus Nitida and replace it with a
Magnolia is $320.00.

REQUEST: That the City remove one Magnolia tree in the parkway at City expense.
STAFF EVALUATION: A medium sized Magnolia tree that has pushed out the curb and gutter
about 1 1/2".
NEIGHBOR RESPONSE: YES/3 NO/0 NO REPLY/2
RECOMMENDATION: That the request for removal be approved and the tree not be replaced at
this time.
ESTIMATED COST: The estimated cost to remove the Magnolia tree is $300.00.
APPLICANT: Mr. Sam Scalzo

REQUEST: That the city remove one Liquidamber tree in the parkway at City expense.
STAFF EVALUATION: A medium size Liquidamber tree planted in a narrow parkway. Wendy
Hallman of the Engineering Department advised me they will be replacing the sidewalk, curb and
gutter at this address. They will cut the roots before replacement of sidewalk, etc., however,
Liquidamber trees tend to have shallow root systems. If the roots are pruned, the tree could
become unstable in high winds.
RECOMMENDATION: That the Liquidamber be removed and replaced with a Crape Myrtle. in a
Root Barrier Box.
ESTIMATED COST: The estimated cost of removal of the Liquidamber and replacement with a
Crape Myrtle is $300.00.
