EXTENSION OF MISSION BELL THEME ALONG EL CAMINO REAL BETWEEN
NEWPORT AVENUE AND JAMBOREE ROAD
RECOMMENDATION:
Receive and file.
BACKGROUND:
In September 1986, staff presented a report to City Council regarding the
cost of extending the Mission Bell theme along El Camino Real between
Newport Avenue and Jamboree Road. At that time the cost of the manufacture
and installation of the Mission Bell units was $2200.00 per unit based upon
a minimum of twenty (20) units.
that time the City Council directed staff to contact the Tustin
_istorical Society and solicit their interest in participating in the
program to extend the Mission Bell theme along E1 Camino Real between
Newport Avenue and Jamboree Road. The participation in the program was
defined as soliciting funding for the project from the business persons
along E1 Camino Real within the project limits.
In September 1986, a telephone response was received from Ms. Carol Jordan
of the Tustin Historical Society indicating that they were not interested
in pursuing or funding the Mission Bell theme along E1 Camino Real between
Newport Avenue and Jamboree Road.
DISCUSSION:
Based upon an average 4% inflation factor per year, staff estimates a new
unit price for each Mission Bell unit completely installed to be $2475.00,
based upon a twenty unit minimum.
Segments of E1 Camino Real between Newport Avenue and Jamboree Road will be
involved with extensive reconstruction in the future as follows:
* Relocation and reconstruction between Orange Street and
Red Hill Avenue by Caltrans in 1990-91.
* Widening and reconstruction between Red Hill and a point
easterly of Browning Avenue by the City. No scheduled
date at this time.
The segments between Newport Avenue and Orange Street and a point easterly

of Browning Avenue and Jamboree Road are constructed at their ultimate
width and alignment.
Staff would suggest that no Mission Bells be installed along El Camino
Real until such time the entire length of roadway is constructed to its
ultimate width and alignment. This would preclude a dual cost for any
future relocation of the units.
