HUSTON, CITY MANAGER POLICE DEPARTMENT PROCLAMATION .p 6/4/90 Inter -Com PROCLAMATION - PARTNERS IN EDUCATION Recommendation The City Council recognize the dedication and commitment to the youth of this City of the Tustin Police Department and the Tustin Unified School District by issuing the attached proclamation. Background The Tustin Police Department (TPD) and the Tustin Unified School District (TUSD) have been working together diligently for approximately one and one-half years to address specific problems in this community as they relate to TUSD. The two areas of concern are drugs and gangs. Sergeant Steve Lewis (TPD) and Ms. Nancy Diaz -Miller (TUSD), together with a strong support group from each agency, formed a unique partnership that allows for a high level of communication between TUSD and TPD. This facilitates the handling of the areas of concern with a great deal of success. I have seen a high degree of cooperation between the two agencies. This cooperation has led to Memorandums of Understanding between Dr. Maury Ross (Superintendent of Schools) and I, which enables both agencies to receive monies for grants to implement specialized programs to provide for the safety of this community --specifically, the youth. Others have witnessed this spirit of cooperation. Recently, the Human Services Conference for the Department of Education in Orange County recognized this unique partnership by requesting that Tustin present its partnership. The TUSD/TPD Team was one of only three selected from Orange County to give such a presentation. The presentation was provided for over 600 educators, administrators, doctors, teachers, and law enforcement personnel during the conference.
