COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT AND POLICE DEPARTMENT
SOUTHWEST NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council schedule a study workshop
on July 2nd or at another time convenient to the City Council.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
The City Council at their regular meeting on May 7, 1990 discussed
the issue of overcrowding and requested that staff report back with
additional data within 60 days. Since the City Council's meeting
on May 7th, representatives from the City Manager's office, City
Attorney's office, Police Department and Community Development
Department have met and discussed the issues raised by the City
Council and believe that the issues present in the southwest
portion of the City are much more complex and are not limited to
overcrowding, particularly with the City's proceeding with it's
Problem Oriented Policing Program (POP) . It was also felt that the
seriousness of these issues really warrant a whole meeting. Staff
would, therefore, suggest that the City Council schedule a special
workshop prior to their meeting on July 2nd or at another time
convenient to the Council. We suggest a minimum of one hour for
a comprehensive presentation question/answer session. In preparing
for the workshop, staff have identified an outline and approach
statement of those informational items that we would like to share
with the Council in a staff presentation.
