BACKGROUND: The City Council at a recent meeting requested staff to review the remaining overhead utility poles/facilities at the southeasterly corner of Newport Avenue and Main Street with respect to the potential under - grounding of these facilities and to determine the cost for said work. DISCUSSION: A field review reveals that there are four utility poles that would require removal/undergrounding. These poles are shown in the approximate locations on the attached map. It is estimated that approximately 430 lineal feet of overhead utilities would be required to be undergrounded at an estimated cost of $94,000.00. These overhead lines are all located within overhead easements on private property and would require new underground easements with construction in the backyards and/or open spaces of the apartment complexes. This construction would result in a disruption to each of the affected properties. Additionally, four overhead services would have to be converted to underground services with the property owners bearing the cost of the conversions. Visibility of two of the four utility poles is about 80% obstructed with the new building, while visibility on the remaining two utility poles is about 50% obstructed with landscaping/trees. Due to the complexity and estimated cost of undergrounding the facilities, staff recommends against any undergrounding of these facilities.
