SUBJECT: TREE REMOVAL REQUEST - 14831 ALDER LANE
RECOMMENDATION:
Pleasure of the City Council.
BACKGROUND:
On July 2, 1990, the City Council took an action on the staff
recommendation to deny the request for the removal of one Magnolia tree
at 14831 Alder Lane. The initial request for removal was made by Ms.
Margaret Cecere.
The tree in question is a medium size Magnolia tree with a trunk
diameter size of approximately 5-6 inches. The tree was planted in the
mid -1970's by the developer as a city requirement for new development.
It is consistent with the adjacent parkway trees in the neighborhood and
there is no current damage to either the sidewalk or curb and gutter as
a result of the tree roots.
Prior to this request being presented to the City Council on July 2nd, a
questionnaire was sent to five of the immediate residents next door and
across the street. Three responses were in favor of the removal and two
responses were against the removal.
Pictures of the tree in question are attached for your information.
DISCUSSION:
Ms. Cecere recently called the Public Works Department and again
requested the tree in front of her residence be removed. Her major
complaint is that the tree drops its leaves and is messy.
The Magnolia tree is considered an evergreen tree and retains leaves all
year round. However, as with any type of evergreen tree, it does drop
its leaves at various times of the year.
Ms. Cecere also expressed her desire not to have a replacement tree
planted if the Magnolia tree is removed. She also asked what legal
remedies she would have if the tree was not removed. Staff did not
respond to her on this matter.
A copy of this report has been forwarded to Ms. Cecere, as well as the
date, time and place that it will appear on the City Council agenda.
