With encouragement and direction from the City Council, staff has
developed a preliminary outline for a new special event entitled
"Celebration of the Family Week." Geared to provide recreation
programs and services focusing on the family, this community event
scheduled for May 12-18, 1991, will offer a variety of educational
and recreational programs designed to highlight family and
community enrichment.
Details for the Celebration are now being formulated by the
Community Services Department in cooperation with the Parks and
Recreation Commission. A series of thought provoking and
informational mini -seminars provided through department
instructors, is being planned for evenings during this special
week. As suggested by the Commission, all local non -profits will
be informed of the event.
Weekend activities will be kicked off by a Spaghetti Dinner hosted
by the Senior Center volunteers at the Senior Center. This
intergenerational event will feature entertainment from "Popular
Demand", a family musical group. Friday evening activities will be
followed up Saturday morning with the 5K/10K Run, Family Walking
Event and Family Expo at the Tustin Market Place. The Family Expo
will feature information on services, products and activities of
interest to families in the community.
The Tustin Market Place has enthusiastically offered their support
as a major sponsor by contributing $5,000. In addition, they have
generously committed the use of the Tustin Market as the site for
the Celebration of the Family Week culminating event. The start
and finish of the 5K/10K Run and Family Expo will take place on the
Tustin Market Place grounds.
Community Services Department Staff is very interested in the
comments and ideas the Council may have regarding these activities.
As plans become more concrete, the Council will receive updates as
to specific schedules, activities, promotional approaches, and
Council roles at the Celebration. Staff is very enthusiastic about
the development of this special event which will provide the Tustin
Community with an enriching family-oriented week of activities.
