HUSTON, CITY MANAGER FROM: COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT SUBJECT: CELEBRATION OF THE FAMILY WEEK RECOMMENDATION: Receive and file. BACKGROUND: REPORTS NO. 3 11-5-90 Inter - Com With encouragement and direction from the City Council, staff has developed a preliminary outline for a new special event entitled "Celebration of the Family Week." Geared to provide recreation programs and services focusing on the family, this community event scheduled for May 12-18, 1991, will offer a variety of educational and recreational programs designed to highlight family and community enrichment. Details for the Celebration are now being formulated by the Community Services Department in cooperation with the Parks and Recreation Commission. A series of thought provoking and informational mini -seminars provided through department instructors, is being planned for evenings during this special week. As suggested by the Commission, all local non -profits will be informed of the event. Weekend activities will be kicked off by a Spaghetti Dinner hosted by the Senior Center volunteers at the Senior Center. This intergenerational event will feature entertainment from "Popular Demand", a family musical group. Friday evening activities will be followed up Saturday morning with the 5K/10K Run, Family Walking Event and Family Expo at the Tustin Market Place. The Family Expo will feature information on services, products and activities of interest to families in the community. The Tustin Market Place has enthusiastically offered their support as a major sponsor by contributing $5,000. In addition, they have generously committed the use of the Tustin Market as the site for the Celebration of the Family Week culminating event. The start and finish of the 5K/10K Run and Family Expo will take place on the Tustin Market Place grounds. Community Services Department Staff is very interested in the comments and ideas the Council may have regarding these activities. As plans become more concrete, the Council will receive updates as to specific schedules, activities, promotional approaches, and Council roles at the Celebration. Staff is very enthusiastic about the development of this special event which will provide the Tustin Community with an enriching family-oriented week of activities. 3tit�2 Susan M.
