HUSTON, CITY MANAGER REPORTS NO. 2 12-17-90 Inter - Com PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION SUBJECT: PROJECT STATUS UPDATE I-5 WIDENING AND I-5/SR-55 INTERCHANGE RECONSTRUCTION PHASE 2 RECOMMENDATION: Receive and file. I-5 WIDENING Transmitted is a sketch of the I-5 widening project limits within the City of Tustin upon which Caltrans has indicated milestone dates for key activities. Of particular note is January 14, 1991 for the closure of all on and off ramps at Red Hill Avenue. By closing all ramps at one time, it is estimated that project construction time will be reduced six months from the ime anticipated should partial freeway access have been maintained. I-5/SR-55 INTERCHANGE RECONSTRUCTION PHASE 2 The construction of the Irvine Boulevard/Fourth Street bridge structure across SR -55 began in August, 1990. The basic stem structure will be completed in January 1991, at which time utilities will be given an opportunity to begin work. Utility relocation in the bridge is scheduled to be completed in February, 1991. Bridge construction will then resume and is scheduled to be completed in April or May, 1991. Final pavement, signing and striping is scheduled to coincide with the completion of the Fourth Street bridge crossing I-5 in Santa Ana. Both structures are scheduled to be opened in August, 1991. Demolition of the First Street bridge across SR -55 will begin in August, 1991, and construction of the replacement structure will start in October, 1991. Utility relocation into the new First Street bridge will be in February and March, 1992. The bridge structure will be completed in May, 1992 with tie-ins signing and striping completed in June, 1992, when the bridge will be opened. The First Street bridge across I-5 in Santa Ana will not be opened until November, 1992. A critical path schedule of the project is kept in the Engineering Division.
