WILLIAM A. HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
CHRISTINE SHINGLETON, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
STATUS REPORT - 200 EL CAMINO
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that'the City Council authorize staff to obtain
at least three demolition bids and order the demolition of a fire
damaged structure by the lowest bidder as soon as possible and
appropriate a maximum of $30,000 from general fund reserve for said
work.
BACKGROUND
Staff have previously recommended deferring demolition of the fire
damaged substandard structure at 200 E1 Camino Real to permit an
additional effort at contacting the owner, representative of the
owner and financial lender on the property based 6n advice of the-
City Attorney. Unfortunately, over the last thirty days there have
been no responses or any effort to get the premises cleared.
Numerous site inspections of the broperty as well as additional
complaints have been received over the last several weeks. Staff
is concerned at this time that it is becoming more difficult to
keep the site secured and it is becoming an attraction for
trespassers which poses a significant public health and safety
hazard.
Staff have contacted several demolition contractors for preliminary
demolition estimates. Estimated costs for this demolition could
range from $20,000 to $30,000. It is requested that the City
Council authorize staff to obtain at least three demolition
propOsals and authorize Staff to order the demolition to the lowest
bidder as soon as possible. Once the work is completed and costs
finalized, the City would hold a public hearing and could assess
and recover all costs incurred through a lien or assessment against
the property.
