BACKGROUND
NEW BUSINESS
NO. 6

Inter - Com
In conjunction with the recent adoption of the Cultural Resources District, a
Cultural Resources Advisory Committee was created by the City Council and staff
were appropriately asked to advertise for future appointments to the Committee.
The Cultural Resources Advisory Committee will act solely in an advisory
capacity to the City Council in matters affecting the City's recently
established Cultural Resources District, designation of noteworthy cultural and
historical resources in the community and as a liaison between residents,
property owners and the City Council in the "Old Town" area.
The Committee will consist of five members. The Ordinance requires at least
three Committee members to reside or own property in the residential areas
within the established Cultural Resources District. To the extent possible, the
Ordinance states that it is desirous for the Committee to have among its
membership at least one person engaged in architecture or a design profession,
one person with a demonstrated interest and knowledge in local history and
historical preservation, one person engaged in business within a designated
Cultural Resources District, and a member of the Tustin Area Historical
Society. The original appointment of the members of the Advisory Committee
would be as follows: two members for 3 years; three members for four years.
Attached for the Council's information are those requests for appointment that
have been received to date. Staff has contacted the Historical Society and
requested that they submit a name for appointment to the Advisory Committee,
once it is received we will forward it to the Council for their consideration.
The Council, at their pleasure, may wish to schedule interviews or make direct
appointments.

Subject: Membership Nomination for Cultural Resources
Advisory Committee of Tustin
Dear Christine:
I am writing to you because I am interested in being
nominated to the Cultural Resources Advi-sory Committee.
As a resident in the Cultural Resource Overly District I
am concerned about how our area is preserved. Since my
wife and I are perhaps the youngest owners/residents in
the district-- 22 and 25, respectively --I feel that as a
Committee member I can offer unique perspectives for
enhancing and preserving our area. In addition, I am a
Civil Engineer which would qualify me as a member being
engaged in a design profession.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me
at home at 544-3836. Your time and consideration is
appreciated.
Sincerely,

Dear Christine:
I first want to say that I
regarding the Cultural Resources
put so much time and energy into
believe you are doing a fine job
Overlay District that you have
over this past year.
While there always will be apprehension regarding the
exercising of "control" with regard to an owner's right to modify
or alter his residence by standards created by a governmental
body, generally the members of T.R.U:S.T. (Tustin Residents
United to Save Tustin) believe that the cure is still better than
the disease. The disease being the past practice and philosophy
of the Planning Commission of benign neglect of the heightened
awareness of the need to protect and defend the historical
significance of Old Town Tustin.
I am not generally induced in the area of public policy or
stewardship of my non -corporate time, but I feel very strongly
that for too long the avoidance of effectively dealing with
cultural and historic preservation issues has prevailed in
Tustin, and therefore, I would appreciate being considered for
the Advisory Board of the Cultural Resources Advisory Committee.
Sincerely,
