FOR TREE REMOVALS R ECOM MEN DATION: That the City Council approve the Public Works Departments' recommendation on tree removals as shown on the attached exhibit. BACKGROUND: The attached is a consolidation of requests whiCh have been received from various property owners regarding trees within the public-right-of-way. In all cases, with the exception of commercial areas, adjacent property owners have been surveyed and the results are so indicated. All trees will be removed and replaced by City crews. Replacement will be with a tree of acceptable species from the City's approved list. The Ficus Nitida at 17362 Amaganset is 70-80% mature. The extensive root system has lifted the sidewalk, caused lawn care problems and the berries have stained the sidewalk. The Chinese Elm at 148 Mt. View is 80-90% mature. It has rot in the main trunk due to major storm damage and is mis-shaped. The sidewalk has been repaired because of tree extensive root system. It has slightly raised the sidewalk and the home owner has Stated that it is very messy. It is not on the approved residential tree list. The tree is root bound within the parkway, and it is not an approved residential tree. Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace it with a slow growth tree. The Carrotwood tree at 2322 Figtree is 60-70% mature. The extensive root system has destroyed the parkway grass. Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace it with a 15 gallon Carrotwood tree. Their extensive root systems have caused the sidewalk as well as curb and gutter problems. Also, the private brick wall has been cracked. Request for Tree Removals Exhibit to Staff Report dated August 24 1988 · The Carrotwood tree at 1751 Lance Drive is 70-80% mature. It's root system is causing plumbing problems and raising the sidewalk. Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace it with a slow growth tree. Neighbor response, 2 yes, 0 no 3 no response. The Ficus Nitida at 17472 Parker Drive is 70-80% mature. It was planted in too small a space and has damaged the sidewalk and the gutter, as well as the lawn, and it has created sewer stoppage problems. Recommendation: Remove the tree. The root systems have damaged the sidewalk and one tree obstructs the light from the street lamp. Recommendation: Remove both trees and replace with only one slow growth tree. It's extensive surface root system has raised the sidewalk. The berries have stained the sidewalks. Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace it with a slow growth tree. The extensive root system has raised the sidewalk and is causing plumbing problems. Recommendation: Remove the trees and replace with only one tree due to the spacing and location of the water meter. The extensive root system has raised the sidewalk, one tree is to close to the driveway and another is to close to the water meter. Request for Tree Removals Exhibit to Staff Report dated August 24, 1988 The two Carrotwood trees at 2342 Anatree are 60-70% mature. The extensive surface roots have destroyed the parkway, in many places it is solid root from the trees to the sidewalk. This has destroyed the existing sprinkler system and prohibits installation of a new one. Recommendation: Remove the trees and replace them with two 15 gal Carrotwoods. The berries that drop during the summer months are a source of aggravation. The surface roots are destroying the parkway. Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace it with a slow growth tree. Neighbor response, 3 yes, 0 no, 2 no response. The Mimosa trees on Dartmouth Circle have slight to no damage to walks or curbing from root systems. The property owner requesting the removal indicated that the trees should be removed at City expense. Recommendation: Since the trees are not causing any damage to City property or creating a public nuisance, the property owner should be advised the trees can be removed by City crews at his expense. The cost would include removal, replacement materials and associated labor. The Carrotwood trees at the following addresses have been requested for removal by the residents taking a block poll. The trees are 50-70% mature. The requests for removal is based on the seed pods .ruining lawns and making a mess on the streets and sidewalks. All of the trees in this area were heavily pruned within the last seven (7) months to control the droppings. The addresses are: 1761 Andrews - one tree 1781 Andrews - one tree 1782 Andrews - four trees 1792 Andrews - three trees 1801 Andrews - three trees 1802 Andrews - three trees 13622 Falmouth - one tree 13732 Falmouth - two trees Recommendation: Do not remove the trees as there is little to no damage to walks or curbs and droppings can be controlled with regular trimming.
