DATE: SEPTEMBER 9, 1988 ~
TO: WILLIAH A. HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
FROM: FRED WAKEFIELD, ACTINC CHIEF OF POLICE
SUBJECT: DRIVINC UNDER THE INFLUENCE (DUI) ENFORCEMENT
At Mayor Hoesterey's request, the following summary of our DUI
enforcement efforts has been prepared. In 1988, we established a
goal to reduce the number of DUI-caused traffic accidents. The
methods used to accomplish this have been:
1. From December 20 to May 31, the traffic section assigned
2 motor officers full-time to the DUI nighttime detail.
Their work hours were 7:30 P.M. to 3:00 A.M. During
this time, 135 arrests for DUI-related offenses were
mad e. ~
2. A third motor was assigned to Watch III (3:00 P.M. to
·
· 11:00 P.M.) to assist them with deployment, plus work
DUI's as time permitted. :
3. We implemented a departmental educational program.
Twenty-four of our thirty-four patrol' officers have
attended a drug and alcohol recognition class in Order
to increase their individual expertise.
The results have been very positive. During the first 8 months of
this year, 305 arrests have been made for DUI-related offenses.
This compares to 99 over the same period of time last year. In
1987, there were 370 injury traffic accidents. Of this number,
35, or 9.45%, were DUI-caused. This year, as of May 31, there
have been 178 reported injury traffic accidents. Only 10, or
5.6Z, have been DUI-related. We hope to continue this trend.
In an effort to continue our momentum, we have applied for a
Federal Traffic Grant that will supply us with 2 additional motor
officers, a traffic clerk, and a civilian traffic investigator.
We should hear soon as to the status of our request.
Respectfully submitted,
Fr~ed Wakefield
