REQUEST FOR TREE REMOVALS

RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council approve the Public Works Departments' recommendation on tree
removals as shown on the attached exhibit.
BACKGROUND:
The attached is a consolidation of requests which have been received from various
property owners regarding trees within the public-right-of-way. In .all cases, with the
exception of commercial areas, adjacent property owners have been surveyed and the
results are so indicated.
All trees will be removed and replaced by City crews. Replacement will be with a tree of
acceptable species from the City's approved list, as stated in the specific
recommendation.

The Ficus Nitida at 17341 ~inewood .is 80 % mature. It has been heavily pruned within
the last six months. The extensive surface root system has caused damage to, walk, curb
and irrigation system. Recommendation: Remove the tree, replace with a slow growth
Southern Magnolia tree. Neighbor response, 4 yes, 1 no, 0 no response. -
The Ficus tree at 1831 'Royal Oak is 45 % mature. It's extensive root system has filled
the narrow three foot parkway, leaving less than 20% of the parkway for ground cover.
Although present damage to the walk and curb is slight, within one and half to two years
the fast growing root system will cause severe damage to the walk and curb.
Recommendation: Remove the tree, replace with slow growth Crepe Myrtle tree.

The Ficus Nitida at 17441 Village Drive is 85% mature with a root system that has
caused damage to the walk. The homeowner has complained in the removal request of
roots in the sewer system. The tree is typical in root system to the majority of Ficus
trees in this area. Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace with a slow growth
Southern Magnolia tree. Neighbor response: 4 yes, 1 no, 0 no response.
The two Ficus Nitidas at 17362 Roseleaf are 70-80% mature with typical root damage
for the area. The walk and curb has been repaired on this years Sidewalk Repair
Program. Recommendation: Remove the tree as past records of Ficus trees in this area
have damaged repaired sidewalks within two years. Replace with Crepe Myrtle trees
which is a slow growth tree. Neighbor response: 4 yes, 0 no, I no response.
The Mimosa tree between 14662 and 14652 Dartmouth Circle has (~ut grown the small
parkway area between the above addresses. It has lifted the sidewalk and apron to both
driveways. Recommendation: Remove and do not replace due to the limited space. The
removal request was received by a neighborhood poll with six homeowners in the
immediate area, 6 yes, 0 no, 0 no response.
The Carrotwood tree at 2311 Figtree is 50% mature with a surface root system that has
caused damage to; turf, irrigation system and slight cracking to the walkway.
Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace with slow growth Southern Magnolia.
Neighbor response: 5 yes, 0 no, 0 no response.
The Ficus Nitida tree at 17352 Amaganset is 85% mature with a root system typical of
the Ficus trees in this area. The walkway has been repaired within the last two years.
Recommendation: Remove the tree as additional damage will occur in the near future,
replace with a slow growth Southern Magnolia tree. Neighbor response: 5 yes, 0 no, 0
no response.

There are two small Alder trees which are 40 % dead and one Ficus Nitida 60 % mature
at 14042 Charloma. The Ficus tree has cause slight damage to surrounding concrete
areas which will only increase with its vigorous root system. The two small Adlers are
root bound and will die within a years time in their declined condition. Recommendation:
Remove all trees and replace with two slow growth Crepe Myrtle trees which conform to
the soil conditions in this area. Neighbor response: 4 yes, I no, 0 no response.
The Rusty Leaf Fig tree at 14302 Heatherfield is 80% mature and has caused repairable
damage to the surrounding concrete areas. Due to the vigorous root system this damage
will increase with time. Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace with a medium
growth Italian Stone Pine tree. Neighbor response: 3 yes, 0 no, 2 no response.
The Ficus Nitida at 1891 Royal Oak has a surface root system which has caused lifting of
the sidewalk, and has damaged the irrigation system in the parkway. Recommendation:
Remove the tree and replace with a slow growth Crepe Myrtle tree. Neighbor response:
2 yes, 0 no, 3 no response.
The 75%. mature Ficus tree at 14352 Cloverbrook has caused moderate damage to the
walk and due to its evasive, vigorous root system will damage the curb and gutter within
the next two years. Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace with a medium slow
growth Italian Stone Pine tree. Neighbor response: 3 yes, 1 no, 0 no response.
The 60% mature misshaped Eucalyptus at 14801 Attboro has caused slight damage to the
concrete area. The tree has lost 45% of its shape due to storm damage and is one sided.
Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace it with a 15 gallon Eucalyptus tree.
Neighbor response: 4 yes, 0 no, 1 no response.
The Carrotwood tree at 2302 Figtree has caused primary damage the the walkway and
curbs and gutters. Recommendation: Remove the tree and replace with a slow growth
Magnolia tree. Neighbor response: 3 yes, 1 no 1 no response.
Recgrnmend that the following re(]uests be denied:
The three Carrotwood trees at 1762 Lance Dr., have caused no damage to surrounding
concrete areas. The complaint of dropping berries and seed pods can be controlled with
timely yearly pruning. Recommendation: Do not remove the trees and prune before
berries mature and cause complaints. Neighbor response: 3 yes, 0 no, 1 no response.
