COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT EL CAMINO REAL CHAMPIONSHIP CHILI COOK-OFT - SEPTElqBER 27, 1987 RECOMMENDATION: 1. Appropriate $2,000 from the General Fund as seed money for the 1987 E1 Camtno Real Championship Chili Cook-Off. ($2,300 was contributed to General Fund. from the last Cook-Off.) _ 2. Designate E1 Camtno Real Street between Main and First Street as the location of the Chili Cook-Off. BACKGROUND: The Second Annual E1 Camtno Real Chili Cook-off was a tremendous success. Local residents sampled a variety of fiery chili and enjoyed top quality western music in the historic heart of Tusttn. $4,200 was contributed to C.~).P.E.S. (Child or Parental Emergency Services), a non-profit parent or child emergency service which services the Tustin area. The event was completely self-supporting and returned $2,300 to the General Fund. Due to liability insurance problems, the Third Annual Chili Cook-Off was cancelled; however, this year's cook-off is ready to go, with the funds raised going to The Tusttn Area Senior Center Fund, Incorporated. Staff is requesting that $2,000 be earmarked as seed money for this year's event. Surplus funds would be used to repay this seed money, which will be used for deposits on equipment, performers, and purchases necessary for the event. All planning thusfar has' assumed the event would again be held in old-town Tustin on E1 Camtno Real. Staff has knowledge of the set-up required for this area, and crowd control is more managable in a contained space. Insurance was obtained with the provision that we would .have the event the same place as before. To change locations at this time would add six to eight weeks to the - schedule and could put the insurance coverage tn jeopardy. Wi th heavy construction equipment from the major development in East Tustin, the liability exposure would be too great to host the event in that area. EL CAMXNO REAL CHAMPIONSHIP CHXL!
