TO: WILLIAM HUSTON, CITY MANAGER FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION TO INSTALL NEW STREET LIGHTS ON MAIN STREET It is recommended that the City Council: 1. Authorize the installation of ten new street lights on Main Street between "C" Street and Pacific Street. 2. Select one of the following alternative designs: a) Edison owned standard type street lights on marbelite poles at an estimated cost of $10,000. b) Edison owned, mission bell type street light and fixture at an estimated cost of $17,000. .c) City owned, decorative, historically accurate ,, · style standard and 1 '~=~A _~ ...... Washington Post" For this alternative, it is also recommended that the City C 'uml..~= ~u un es~lmate~ cost of $27,600. ounc~l authorize a supplemental budget appropriation from General Fund reserve in the amount of $4,600 to cover the additional costs. ~ACKGROUND: In conjunction with the recently completed "Main Street Reconstruction Project,,, approximately 1700 L.F. of underground conduit was constructed to accommodate the installaiton of ten new street lights on Main Street at previously determined locations. At an earlier City Council meeting, staff was requested to investigate the possibility of using decorative/ ornamental type lighting fixtures for this area. There is presently $23 000 budgeted for this project in fiscal year 1988-89. ' DISCUSSION: From an -engineering and economic stand oint. recommended ch ' ~ ~ ...... . INSTALLATION OF STREET LIGHTS ON MAIN STREET October 11,.1988 Page 2. Alternative "B" is the mission bell style fixture similar to what now exists on E1 Camino Real and Main Street in Tustin's Old Town. This option would necessitate the removal and replacement of an additional existing standard type street light and marbelite pole between "B" and "C" _streets, which ~ould increase the number of new lights required from ten =o eleven. The light ~attern of this style fixture would be adequate to meet recommended minimum standards but would not be as good as that supplied by the standard type street lights. This system would also be Edison owned and maintained. Alternative "C" is the Washington Post style standard and luminaire shown on the attached sheet. This is an ornamental, historically accurate, cast iron lighting post. The light pattern of this style fixture is significantly less than that of the standard type street light, but could still be installed to meet recommended minimum lighting standards. As with alternative "B", this choice would also require the replacement of the existing marbelite street light between "B" and "C" streets, for a total-of e~even new lights. This system would be City owned and .aaintained. The City would purchase the lights, hire a contractor to install them, and then be responsible for any maintenance or repairs to the system.
