TO: WILLIAM HUSTON, CITY MANAGER FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION SUBJECT: INFORMATION REPORT, I-5 FREEWAY ACCESS TO FIRST STREET IN CITY OF SANTA ANA At the October 19, 1988 City Council meeting, a City Council member raised a concern regarding future I-5 access to First Street within the City of Santa Aha. The following is a brief written description of what is being planned by Caltrans within that general vicinity with respect to access to First Street. City of Santa Ana staff has confirmed that this access has been approved by the City: 1. The current northbound I-5 off-ramp exits at grade on First Street immediatelY east of the First Street overcrossing of the I-5 Freeway. The planned northbound I-5 off-ramp will continue northerly in the same approximate location, but below the mew First Street over-- crossing and will then make a 180 degree turn crossing over the I-5 Freeway to the westerly side and exiting into Mabury Street. Mabury Street will continue southerly and intersect with First Street on the westerly side of the new First Street overcrossing. Additionally, a new northbound off-ramp will exit to Fourth Street and will provide access to the East via Fourth Street or via Cabrillo Park Drive and First Street. · The Current northbound I-5 on-ramp will be deleted and access to I-5 northbound will be at Fourth Street via a new local street (Cabrillo Park Drive) to be constructed with the Birtcher Development. 3. The current southbound I-5 of-ramp to First Street will be eliminated and replaced by the off-ramp to Fourth Street and its continuance to First Street via Mabury Street located on the west side of the I-5 Freeway. 4. The existing southbound I-5 on-ramp will remain and function as it currently exists. It is our'understanding that all of this work will be accomplished with Stage 2 of the I-5/Rte. 55 interchange reconstruction project. Bob Ledendecker Director of Public Works/City Engineer
