SUBJECT: STOP SIGN REQUEST AT LAURIE LANE AND MALENA DRIVE AND AT ANGLIN
DRIVE AND MALENA DRIVE
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Tustin City Council at their meeting of November 21, 1988 pass
and adopt the attached resolution designating the placement of certain
stop signs.
BACKGROUND:
In response to a request from a resident, two intersections were
investigated with respect to the placement of stop signs. The request
was for the installation of stop signs at the intersection of Laurie
Lane/Malena Drive (on both Laurie Lane and Malena Drive) and at the
intersection of Anglin Drive/Malena Drive (on both Anglin Drive and
Malena Drive). This resident's request for stop signs was a solution
for slowing traffic and discouraging traffic through a residential area.
Both locations are typical residential intersections with excellent
sight distance in all directions. Both intersections are a "T" type
intersection and Malena Drive cul-de-sacs a few hundred' feet south of
Anglin Drive.
The resident's request indicated that their automobile had been
broadsided while parked at the curb by a vehicle making a turn at the
Anglin DriVe/Malena Drive intersection.
DISCUSSION:
The City's consultant traffic engineer has reviewed and made traffic
counts at both intersections and concluded the following:
.
1. Both intersections are typical T-type intersections with excellent
sight distance.
2. Traffic volumes in all directions are very light.
3. Neither intersection satisfies the State warrants for north-south
stop sign installations on Malena Drive.
Because of the T-type intersections, the installation of a stop sign for
westbound Anglin Drive at Malena Drive and eastbound Laurie Lane at
Malena Drive could be supported. Additionally, a "Not a Through Street"
sign should be installed on the westerly side of Malena Drive at the
Anglin inte.rsection.

The attached resolution provides for the authorization to install the
two suggested stop sign installations at the subject intersections.
