DISCUSSION:
The Community Development Department has selected the firm of Urban Design
Studios to prepare the comprehensive City entrance'Sign Program requested
by Council. Proposals were solicited from five design firms, only two of
which responded. Urban Design Studios was selected based upon the level of
sign/urban design experience specifically related to the proposed project.
Proposed costs submitted by each firm were identical ($4,700), and within
the $5,000 authorized by Council.
Staff have met with Urban Design Studios to establish a definite work
schedule and to authorize commencement of work. Council will receive an
updated status report once the defined schedule is complete.
Attached for Council information is a copy of the proposed scope of work.

RE: CITY ENTRY SIGNAGE PROPOSAL
Dear Jeff'
·
URBAN DESIGN STUDIO is pleased to submit this brief letter
proposal to you for the preparation of alternatives for entry
signage for the City. As a small, new firm, we are excited about
the prospect of working with you. If URBAN DESIGN STUDIO is
fortunate enough to get this 3ob we will approach it with the
highest levels of enthusiasm and professionalism.
At URBAN DESIGN STUDIO we recognize that there are a number of
environmental factors which may affect how the viewer percieves a
specific Sign. The most important of these have to.do with
quality, intensity, and color of ambient light falling on the
sign; the physical obstructions of sight lines between the viewer
and sign; and the visual environment behind or around the signs.
PROPOSAL
As I mentioned in our telephone conversation last week, URBAN
DESIGN STUDIO will provide the City of Tustin with sketches and
working drawings for a monument sign and two pole signs.
What we envision with this assignment is to provide the City with
three alternatives of each sign for selection variety. In
addition we feel it will be useful for the City to see our sketch
vignettes of our progress so that various options receive
adequate consideration.
URBAN DESIGN STUDIO will investigate the usage of various
materials for the monument sign such as:
stucco
wood
sandblasted wood
brick and other masonry
URBAN DESIGN STUDIO will investigate different lighting options
for the monument sign such as:
flood or spotlighting "wall washers"
internal lighting
"reverse channel letters"
translucent copy
ambient lighting
framing-projector
