HomeMy WebLinkAboutORD FOR INTRODUCTION 02-01-88FROM: SUBJ ECT~ ~ Pursuant to the request of the Council, please be advised' that the following are the options available relative to Council compensation. 1. Take no action and leave Council compensation at $400.00 per month, the amount at which it has been since 1985. 2. Increase the compensation by the amount of 5% per year as provided by provisions of the Government Code, which would be a total increase of $40.00 per month. 3. Submit the matter to the voters. This could be one of the .following: a. An advisory vote by City voters on whether the Council should or should not increase its compensation by $40.00 per month. b. A binding vote by the City voters on the amount of Council compensation. 1) Whether Council compensation should be increased by $40.00 per month, or 2) Whe{her Council compensation should be increased by some amount either less than $40.00 per month or more than $40.00 per month. This binding vote could be made by the electorate on any amount of compensation. In other words, pursuant to the provisions of the Government Code, Council c~mpensation is fixed by the amounts prescribed for each city in the various population classifications with permitted increases of 5% per year from the date that statute was adopted, all without approval of the voters. Or, the issue can be Put before, the voters and the voters can approve an amount of compensation in excess of the basic $400.00 per month. If the matter is to be placed before the voters, the next regular City election will'be in November, 1988, or it could be placed on a special election called for that purpose. The next date a special election could be held would be June 7, 1988. The City Council of the City of Tustin does hereby ordain as follows: 1. Section 1303 of Chapter 3 of Article 1 of the Tustin City Code is hereby amended to read as follows: 1303 COMPENSATION OF MEMBERS Members of the City Council shall be paid and receive as compensation, a salary of Four Hundred and Forty Dollars ($440.00) per month. 2. This ordinance and the salary herein provided shall become in force and effect at the time any one or more members of the City Council becomes eligible for such salary increase by virtue of beginning a new term of office and. shall thereupon apply to all members of the City Council.
