POLICE DEPARTMENT
MARKED UNIT REPLACEMENT
Recommendation
The purchase of four new marked police units at a cost of
$12,778.68 each for a $51,114.73 total, from Morris J. Sopp and
Son, 5801 Pacific Blvd., Huntington Park, CA.
Background
Council authorized $45,000 for the replacement of three marked
police units in fiscal year 87-88 budget (Acct. #70040080109715).
Another unit needs to be replaced because of being wrecked and
totaled in an accident· Ail three of the patrol units that need
to be replaced have in excess of 50,000 miles and one unit has
over 64,000 miles. Several years of experience has shown that the
breakeven on maintenance costs versus replacement costs is 60,000
miles· ...
We have again chosen to participate in the vehicle evaluation and
purchase process of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office for
four reasons:
The Orange County Sheriff's Department bid also went to Sopp
Chevrolet for the purchase of 46 units.
The California Highway Patrol's bid went for Dodge Diplomat
sedans. We currently have all Chevrolets and would like to
stay with that type of vehicle. Although the Dodge Diplomat
is $524 per unit less, we would have to stock two lines of
replacement parts for our patrol fleet. Additionally,
delivery of the Dodge Diplomats is Sacramento and delivery
charges to Tustin, an added expense of $300 per unit.
Los Angeles County bid process is consistent with the Tustin
City Code.
Sopp Chevrolet is the same vendor that we utilized in 1984,
85, 86 and 87.
The vehicles are being produced early this year again and delivery
