Peters Canyon Regional Park Status
The agreement between the County of Orange and the Irvine Company
to dedicate Peters Canyon Regional Park is scheduled to go to the
Board of Supervisors in the near future. Council should be aware
of the following:
The 360-acre park has boundaries which have previously
been approved by City staff and City Council.
Since approximately 50 percent of the park's land is in
the City of Tustin, or within its sphere of influence,
the dedication agreement provides that the City must
approve the general development plan and the access
plan for the park.
The regional park is dedicated in fulfillment of County
requirements, not city dedication requirements. The
City will lose no park dedication as a result of this
facility. A maximum amount of park land will still be
extracted for the Tustin Ranch development and
dedicated to the City of Tustin.
Loss of wetland habitat in Peters Canyon wash from
Lower Lake Drive down to Jamboree is being mitigated in
the regional park area by the retarding basin.
The regional park is designed to be rather passive, and staff
feels comfortable that the facilities as proposed are compatible
with the East Tustin Specific Plan; however, future park
development will be subject to City Council approval. Should any
Council member have a question, feel free to call Royleen White
at extension 234.
