CENTENNIAL WAY TREE REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Tustin City Council at their meeting of May 16, 1988 authorize
the removal of four Ficus trees on the westerly side of Centennial Way
southerly of First Street and the replacement of same with four
Jacaranda trees (16" box size). Additionally, authorize the planting of
six to seven Jacaranda trees (16" box size) in front of the City Hall
parkway on Centennial Way.
BACKGROUND:
t their May 2, 1988 meeting, the City Council requested staff to study
she possibility of removing four. Ficus trees along the westerly side of
Centennial Way southerly of First Street and replace them with Jacaranda
trees. This replacement would provide continuity of tree species along
both sides of Centennial Way between Main and First streets.
DISCUSSION: . ~-,
Staff has reviewed the four Ficu~ trees and concurs with their removal.
The root systems of these four trees have previously displaced the
sidewalks causing the need for replacement. Additionally, staff would
have most likely recommended that these four Ficus trees be removed in
the future due to their reocurring root problems.
It is suggestedthat the replacement trees (Jacaranda) be a larger size
than the normal 15 gallon size utilized for initial street tree
plantings. The recommended size is a 16-inch box. Additionally, when
these trees are replaced, root barriers will be utilized to minimize any
future sidewalk displacements. Sidewalk replacement would be included
within the City's annual replacement program.
In addition to the area at the north end of Centennial Way, it was
discovered that several trees are missing in front of the City Hall
facility between the two main driveways. It is suggested that six to
seven 16-inch box size Jacaranda trees be planted within the parkway at
this location.
fhe cost for the new trees can be funded with Public Works 1987-88
operational funds which are currently budgeted.
