BACKGROUND: The results on the testtng of the ne~ Vtsual Omnt Range (VOR) location on a roof-top at Mac Arthur and Campus Drive has been completed. Unfortunately, the tests of this system proved to be unsuccessful and another alternative must be chosen. At this time the Airport has decided to Implement a new one-directional beacon that wtll replicate the previous V0R approach. This system consists of a one-directional beacon and ts expected to be in operation by July 15, 1987, however, it is up to the FAA to notify all pilots to use the correct approach. This beacon wtll ~ventually be replaced by a Local 0trectional Antenna (LDA) which has 360° reception as opposed to the one-direction of the beacon. This system is not susceptible to blocktng by structures and wtll replicate the V0R approach. The Noise Abatement Office at John Wayne Airport will continue to receive complaints and is working with City staff to set up temporary noise testing sites throughout town. Once these tests are complete, more information will be available as to the validity of the complaints received and the follow-up procedures necessary to ensure compliance with established noise regulations on in-coming aircraft. Staff wi)l continue to work with the Airport Noise Abatement Office in order to speed up this process. Should you have further questions, please contact this Department.
