CITIZEN CONCERNS - CENTENNIAL PARK LANDSCAPING
INFORMATION REPORT
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
For the City Council meeting of September 2, 1986.
Receive and file.
BACKGROUND:
A resident living adjacent to Centennial Park has raised a concern about the
following items:
1. Removal and replacement of landscaping in Centennial Park.
The capping of various irrigation system sprinkler heads in
the park.
3. Dryness of the trees/shrubs in the park.
DISCUSSION:
Several years ago, the City had received several complaints regarding rodents
which were nesting within the ivy ground cover throughout Centennial Park. The
Vector Control office had suggested that the ivy be removed and replaced with a
different type of vegetation that is not conducive of harboring rodents. Staff
has been removing all ivy growths within Centennial Park and replacing it with
other types of vegetation. '
It is my understanding that the replacement vegetation in the vicinity of the
concerned citizens residence is the Hibiscus plant. These shrubs do not need the
constant over-spray which was used on the ivy and, consequently, a portion of the
irrigation system was capped to conserve water. Additionally, ~he adjacent
residence to the concerned citizen was receiving an excessive amount of water from
either a pool/jacuzzi drain which outlets from his residence and it is my
understanding from. time to time a fish pond located at the same 'residence is
discharged into the landscaped area of the park.

The replacement vegetation is small in size but as mother nature permits they will
soon grow to acceptable sizes. The smaller plants are utilized for economy, but,
if desired by the community, larger plants could certainly be utilized.
Staff has attempted to contact the concerned resident and clarify the City's
actions, but we have been unable to contact him as of this date.
