EXTENSION OF MISSION BELL THEME ALONG EL CAHINO REAL
UPGRADING/IMODIFICATION OF DOWNTOWN AREA SIGNAGE
RECOMMENDATION:
For the City Council meeting of September 2, 1986.
Pleasure of the City Council..
BACKGROUND:
At a previous City Council meeting, staff was requested to investigate the cost of
extending the Mission Bell monuments southeasterly along E1 Camino Real to Myford
Road (future Jamboree) and to review the feasibility of placing a greeting on the
backside of each of the four signs located at E1 Camino Real at First Street and
E1 Camino Real at Newport Avenue.
DISCUSSION:
Mission Bell Monuments
Records indicate that the existing Mission Bell monuments were originally donated
by the downtown business community and installed by the City in the late 1960's or
early 1970's. When E1 Camino Real was recently reconstructed, the Mission Bell
monuments were relocated to their current locations.
We have received a price of $2,200.00 + per unit to manufacture the bells and
completely install each unit. This $2,2~.00 cost is based upon a total of twenty
units. It is estimated that it would take a minimum of twenty units to extend the
Mission Bells along E1 Camino Real between Newport Avenue and Myford Road
maintaining the same approximate spacing as currently exists.
Downtown Area Sigpage
Currently there are four signs as shown on the attached drawing. Two signs are
located on E1 Camino Real westerly of-Newport Avenue and two are located on E1
Camino Real southerly of First Street.

PAGE TWO
Each sign has a message on only one side. Council has requested that a
message/greeting be placed on the reverse side of each sign. Depending upon the
length of greeting and style of lettering on the reverse sides, the new signs
could range in cost from $600-$800 per unit. The existing units could possibly be
utilized, depending upon the condition of the wood. The costs could be reduced
accordingly if the existing units are utilized. In the event the Council desires
to change these signs, it is requested that the message/greeting be established so
that firm cost estimates can be obtained.
