STREET TREE RENOVALS - W~mEELER PLACE BEIYEEN LAURIE LANE AND
SANTA CLARA AVENUE (INFORNATION 'REPORT)
During the week of October 6th, a portion of the street tree (ficus tree} on
Wheeler Avenue broke off and hit a building on private property. Additionally,
the broken limb came close to hitting two children that were walking on the
sidewalk.
As a result of this incident, staff reviewed all of the remaining ficus trees
along Wheeler Place. Many of these remaining trees were observed to have some of
the same characteristics as the above mentioned tree which broke. These trees
were observed to have very narrow crotch areas with bark deterioration which tend
to pocket water and moisture resulting in water rot. The ficus tree has a very
dense and heavy foilage which tends to put more stress on the weakened areas.
There are eighteen ficus trees along Wheeler Place which have similar problems as
noted above. Staff will be proceeding with the removal and replacement of these
eighteen trees. As time permits, the remaining 8-10 trees will also be removed
and replaced as they are not considered an immediate liability problem.
As a part of the removal and replacement program, each of the residents along
Wheeler Place will be contacted and informed as to the reasons for these tree
removals.
