Dear Mr. Huston:
In response to your letter of January 21, 1987 which states your
concern regarding the air-worthiness of the CH-$SE helicopter and
requests that flights of this helicopter over populated areas of
Tustin be discontinued pending a conclusive determination of the
craft's ability to operate safely, the following statement is
provided:
"The CH-53E helicopter is a safe, reliable aircraft.
There has been no conclusive determination to the
contrary. The Marine Corps will continue to operate
this aircraft in support of our mission requirements
which includes Instrument Landing Approaches into
John Wayne Airport".
I appreciate your concern on this matter, particularly given the
strong attention to the CH-S3E in the media, but I assure you that
our pilots will not fly any aircraft that is considered unsafe.
Sincerely,
· P. MILLER
Brigadier General, U.S. Marine Corps
Commander
