HUSTON, CITY ~4ANAGER RESPONSE FROM MARINE CORPS REGARDING lliE CH-53E HELICOPTER Attached for the City Council's information is the response from General Miller, Commander of the Marine Corps Air Bases, Western Area, to the City's request that flights of the CH-53E over populated areas of Tustin be discontinued until there has been an evaluation of it's air-worthiness. Huston City Manager City of Tustin 300 Centennial Way Tustin, CA 92680 JAN CITY MAN/ GE , IN REPLY REFER TO: AQ/0234a 23 Gan 1987 Dear Mr. Huston: In response to your letter of January 21, 1987 which states your concern regarding the air-worthiness of the CH-$SE helicopter and requests that flights of this helicopter over populated areas of Tustin be discontinued pending a conclusive determination of the craft's ability to operate safely, the following statement is provided: "The CH-53E helicopter is a safe, reliable aircraft. There has been no conclusive determination to the contrary. The Marine Corps will continue to operate this aircraft in support of our mission requirements which includes Instrument Landing Approaches into John Wayne Airport". I appreciate your concern on this matter, particularly given the strong attention to the CH-S3E in the media, but I assure you that our pilots will not fly any aircraft that is considered unsafe.
