SUBJECT:
HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
DONALD D. I.~g, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
INSTALLATION OF CITY ENTRANCE SIGNS.
BACKGROUND:
Last summer the City Council authorized replacement of the three wishing well
entry signs located along the westerly entrances to the City. Councilman
Greinke requested staff to consider using the old signs for temporary placement
at other entrances. The City Council at your last meeting requested a status
report concerning this subject from staff.
DISCUSSION:
Since the replacement wishing well entrance signs were just installed last
month, the old signs are now available for placement elsewhere in the
community. However, in the opinion of the sign installer, the old signs are
severely weathered and obviously not of the quality presented by the replacement
new signs. However, the signs may temporarily be used at such locations the
Council may desire until permanent stgnage can be manufactured.
Concerning the long term placement of entry signs throughout our community, the
Community Development Department desires the opportunity to propose an "urban
design" element of our general plan which would establish design standards for
community appearance. In summary, an urban design element would identify all
entry portals to the community and propose specific signing size, shape and*
color. The urban design element would also compile Public Works Department
plans for existing and proposed median island landscaping to establish
acceptable varieties of theme trees and consistency in median island
construction. The element would also esta.blish guidelines for parkway
landscaping adjoining commercial businesses which the Planning Commission and
Council may review when considering new development projects. In this fashion,
the City would have a consistent landscape theme plan for each of its major
arterial highways resulting in a distinctive quality appearance.
Should Council wish to further consider preparation of an urban design element,
staff would report back at a later date with a specific proposal outlining the
scope of work and estimated costs for such a project.
