TO:
WILLIAM HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
FROM:
DALE A. WICK, ASSISTANT CITY ENGINEER
SUBJECT: AWARD OF CONTRACT FOR NEWPORT AVENUE RESERVOIR ROOF REPAIRS
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council, at their meeting of March 4, 1985, award
the contract for subject repairs to Ultimo General Building Contractors of Dana
Point, CA in the amount of $26,297.00.
BACKGROUND:
Subject project encompasses replacement of rotted rafters and sheathing and
installing a new metal roof on the Newport Avenue 1,250,000 gallon domestic water
storage reservoir.
Bids for this work were opened on February 26, 1985 at 10:00 A.M. and were
received as follows:
Contractor Business Location Bid
Ultimo General Building Contractors Dana Point, CA
$26,297.00
The one bid submitted is 10% below the engineers estimate of $29,250.00.
Apparently due to the volume of work presently under way in the building trades
very little interest was indicated in this relatively small project, since only
four sets of plans were taken out during the advertisement period. The
Engineering Division feels that the bid submitted by Ultimo is reasonable and,
even though it is the only bid, it appears competitive. This project requires
taking the Newport Reservoir out of service for one month to permit construction.
The reservoir must be back in service by April 15 to provide for warm weather
water demands. Consequently, if the project were to be re-advertised it would
have to be delayed until the winter of '85-'86. Due to the questionable condition
of the existing roof, it is our recommendation to proceed with the work at this
time.
Attached, for the City Council's information, is a tabulation of all bids
received.
