STEERING COMMITTEE FOR A SENIOR CENTER PROGRESS REPORT
RECOMMENDATION:
Receive and file.
BACKGROUND:
The Steering Committee for a Senior Center has met several times during the past
two months. The Committee, working with Recreation Systems, Inc., and members
of the City staff, has been finalizing the size and scope of the facility needed
for seniors in the Tusttn area. The Commftte anticipates that the Design
Development Report will be completed and ready for presentation to the City
Council at your September 16, 1985 meeting.
The Community Development Department has contracted a surveyor to produce a
topographical survey of the Senior Center site and the adjacent land in
Peppertree Park. The survey and base sheet will allow the Committee to properly
orient the Senior Center on the site and to take advantage of existing site
features. The Committee will review scale floor plans and site placement at its
next meeting on July 25, 1985.
A tentative date of July 22 has been projected for Close of Escrow on the 1.27
acres being purchased from the Tustin Unified School District. A sign
announcing that the property will be the future site of the Tustln Senior
Citizens Center has been ordered. A reception/ceremony to announce the passing
of title will be arranged so that suitable publicity can be received and so that
the senior community can celebrate.
Staff is currently developing a grant application for funding from the Senior
Center Bond Act. The application will be completed well in advance of the
August 15, 1985 deadline. Funding is also being pursued through the Housing and
Community Development Block Grant Program, Federal Revenue Sharing, State Park
and Recreation Bond Act, and the Roberti-Z'Berg Urban Open Space Grant Program.
Most application deadlines are listed as October 1, 1985.
The Steering Committee for a Senior Center is also planning and organizing a
fundratsing campaign directed toward local corporations, charitable foundations
and individuals. A fall kick-off is projected at this time for the fundratstng
effort. The Steering Committee is currently recruiting volunteers to serve as
Fundratsing Sub-Committee members. A preliminary budget of 1.5 million dollars
has been established for the 18,000 square foot facility which the Steering
Committee feels is necessary to provide adequate space for the many senior
programs and activities offered in the Tustin area. (This size and concept was
supported by Council at its September 17, 1984, meeting.) A rendering will be
available from the completed Design Development Report which will help
illustrate what the center will actually look like. It should be a great help
in raising funds for the project.
Donors will receive individual recognition for their contributions. A trust
account has been set up by the City Finance Department so that contributions can
be received immediately. Monies will be earmarked for the Center and reserved
for its construction. Recognition will vary according to the size of the
contribution and will include many types of acknowledgement. The Steering
Committee will be finalizing the details for the fundraising campaign in the
next few weeks.
Progress is being made toward our goal of constructing a Senior Center. The
Design Development Report should be completed in September which would allow it
to be included with several grant applications. The Steering Committee is
excited about their achievements and looks forward to continued success in the
coming months.
