TO:
Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM:
Director of Community and Administrative Services
SUBJECT: NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION FOR SENIOR CENTER FUNDRAISING
RECOMMENDATION
To approve a non-profit organization and private sector fundraising
campaign for the Tustin Area Senior Center; and to authorize City
Attorney and other city staff to proceed with incorporation of the
tax exempt organization as soon as possible.
BACKGROUND
As Council is aware, a group has been initiated to raise money from
the private sector for the Tustin Area ~nior Center. A presentation
on this project was given at the September 9 Council-Committee workshop;
and materials have been forwarded to those Councilmembers who were absent.
Ken Hoesterey and Margarete Thompson are chairing this fundraising effort.
Many foundations, trusts and charitable organizations require that the
money they donate must be given to a non-profit corporation. In addition,
the non-profit corporation allows those who donate to have a legitimate
tax deduction.
For these reasons, the fundraising committee wishes to organize a tax-
exempt non-profit corporation. The City Attorney's staff is familiar
with this process, as they assisted Community Services staff with
incorporating Tustin Public Information in 1984. It is respectfully
requested that the City Attorney be requested to begin this process
as soon as possible, as the fundraising committee already has donations
obligated, dependent upon obtaining non-profit status.
