BACKGROUND: July, August and September are always busy for the Community Services Department. Summer Softball registration takes place in early July and as usual more teams wanted to play than we could accommodate. Eighty- six teams submitted rosters and checks to play in Summer leagues. Eighty teams were accepted and organized into leagues. In addition to league softball, several tournaments were held at Columbus-Tustin during the month bringing in $2,398 in rental revenue. Several excursions were held durqng July including trips to the Pageant of the Masters, River Rafting on the King's River and a day trip to Raging Waters Aquatic Park. All the trips were successful and will be scheduled again next Summer. A Time-Management WorkShop was held for department personnel during the month. Simple, common sense methods of maximizing your time were stressed. Lots of positive comments were received after the in-service training. A continuing effort to develop team .work, staff morale and attitudes will feature semi- annual training programs, goal setting disc'ussions and periodic program and department evaluations. The City's Fourth of July Celebration featured a dazzling fireworks display, live music, square dancers and mimes. Volunteers from the Tustin Senior Citizen's Club assisted with ushering duties, the Chamber of Commerce and Police Association sold balloons and refreshments. Senior Citizens had an active July. The new Eerchant's Discount Directory was published listing local merchants offering discounts to senior citizens. Two hundred and thirteen seniors received assistance with Renter's Rebate/ Homeowner's Rebate/Utility Credit forms. On July 19, A.A.R.P. held its Second Annual Picnic at Peppertree Park. On July 26 seniors joined the .rest of Tustin in cheering for the Olympic Torch Relay runners. 'l~84'SUMMER QUARTERLY REPORT Page 2 November 19, 1984 The Summer Day Camp program concluded in August. Over 140 participated in the program this year. The camp program featured lots of excursions, a camp out, movies, crafts, art, music and sports. Also, wrapping up in August was the Adult Men's Basketball program. Gymnasium facilities at Tustin High School were used for three and five man programs. Preparations for Tustin Tiller Days continued during August. Several new contests (cake baking, tiny tots, break dancing and pie eating) will be added to the program. The organizing committee is excited about the new location at Columbus- Tustin Park. Together with the Chrysler-Plymouth Tustin Tiller Days 5K, this years event promises to be one of the best ever. The Olympics attracted everyones attention, time and money during August. Attendance at almost all activities during the month were down as millions of Southern Californians tuned in on the Olympics. Class revenues for the month were down but are expected to return to normal for the rest of the year. The 16th Annual Jaycees Senior Citizen's Picnic was held on August 18 with over 200 senior citizens in attendance. The Marine Corp served up its delicious fried chicken, followed by bingo and games. Sixteen seniors will be cruising to Alaska in September. Stops are scheduled at several Alaskan towns and Victoria and Vancouver, Canada. Plans for winter activities were started in September. Lead time for Tustin Today dictates that staff must work four to five months ahead of a program or activity. Registration for fall activities also began in September with participation up again after the Olympics. Preparations for Tustin Tiller Days and the 5K Run were fine tuned during September. It looks like a record setting event with a little over 100 booths and spaces reserved. Saturday night will feature a spectacular sky diving exhibition. Fall Softball registration was held in September with 76 teams placed in leagues. The schedule will be completed by December 14. The one month between leagues will be used to do some major field renovations at Columbus-Tustin. Jeff Kolin, Recreation Superintendent JK:ls
