Honorable Mayor and City Council

PROPOSITION 30, SENIOR CENTER BOND ACT OF 1984
RECOMMENDATION
Council to adopt Resolution Number 84-78, supporting Proposition 30.
BACKGROUND
As Council is aware, Senate Bill 1359 was signed into law by Governor George
Deukmejian in July of this year. SB 1359 became Proposition 30, the Senior
Center Bond Act of 1984 on the November ballot. In its original .form,
Proposition 30 provided $100 million for construction of senior citizen
centers; however, in conference committee that amount was reduced by half.
Staff anticipates that approximately $3 million will be made available to
Orange County from the proceeds of this Bond Act.
As Council is aware, the Steering Committee for a Senior Center has been very
active for the last year and is moving forward with plans to construct a senior
center in Tustin. Since we are the only City in Orange County without a
senior center, we feel that we should have a priority on the funding
available. Therefore, this particular Bond Act has significant interest to
the residents of Tustin.
