COSTA MESA FREEWAY (RTE. 55)/SANTA ANA FREEWAY (I-5) INTERCHANGE -
INFORMATION REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL
Correspondence from CalTrans indicates that their Los Angeles District office is
currently completing the final EIR/EIS for the subject interchange modification
project. It was further indicated that CalTrans is recommending the major
reconstruct alternative that incorporates design variations I-NSS to NS and3-SS
to SSS.
The basic features of the.project are:
(a)
Relocation of the southbound Rte. 55 McFadden off and on ramps 1,500
feet southerly of the existing location to a point southerly of the
Xerox complex.
(b)
Widen the existing six-lane freeways within the study limits to basic
eight-lane facilities with auxiliary lanes, 22-foot median, 12-foot
lanes and 10-foot shoulders.
(c)
In Santa Aha, extend Cabrillo Park Drive and widen Mabury Street
between First and Fourth Streets; eliminate the Route 5 northbound
on-ramp and southbound off-ramp to First Street.
(d)
Replace the northbound 55 to northbound 5 and southbound 55 to
southbound 5 small-radius loop connectors with two-lane flyover
structures.
These recommendations are the same as recommended by the City except for feature
(a). Originally, the City Council, at staffs recommendation, requested the
McFadden ramps stay at their present location with a braided roadway (grade
separated) at the ramps to eliminate conflict. The design variation, as proposed
by CalTrans, will require the taking of less residential units
(apartments/condominiums) than the Citx's initial recommendation.
CalTrans will hold an open house to update the concerned public on September 20,
1984 at the Tustin School District Boardroom between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and
8:00 p.m.
