BACKGROUND: The Allen family of 1892 Sandwood Place has requested the removal of three Rusty Leaf Fig (Ficus Rubiginosa) trees from the parkway adjacent their residence. Additionally., they request replacement trees be planted. A copy of their letter of request is attached for information. In July., 1978,, Council adopted a policy on tree removal and replacement as follows: Case I Case II - Case III - - Problem tree (City approved) causing present or future damage to curbs and sidewalks. City removes tree and replaces it with a 15 gallon size tree at City expense. Undesirable tree (City approved) due to extensive litter or other problems. City removes tree at City expense and replaces it at property owners expense for labor, materials and tree. Unapproved tree (not of a problem or desirable species). City removal and replacement at full cost to property owner. DISCUSSION: The Allen's trees fall into Case I of the current City Policy and involves three trees, one tree in front of the residence on Sandwood Place and two trees on Cloverbrook Drive adjacent to the side yard of the residence. REQUEST FOR TREE REMOVAL JULY 11, 1984 PAGE 2 The sidewalk adjacent to the side yard is being displaced by the tree root systems as is the sidewalk landing area between the sidewalk and curb in front of the Allen residence. The parkways adjacent to all three trees have an abundance of large surface roots within the lawn area which prevents adequate lawn care and maintenance. Staff suggests that all three trees adjacent to 1892 Sandwood Place be removed and the two trees on the Cloverbrook Drive frontage be replaced with two'15 gallon size Magnolia Trees. There is not adequate space for a replacement tree on the Sandwood Place frontage. 1)6b Ledendecker Director of Public Works/City Engineer BL:jr Side Yard on Cloverbrook Drive Side Yard on Cloverbrook Drive 1892 Sandwood Place JUN i 3 1984 TUSTINav PUB~RKS DEPT.
