WINTER 1984 QUARTERLY REPORT
The Winter quarter includes the months of January, February, and March. The
Winter, 1984 quarter was a tremendous success this year. Several new programs
were added to our class and activity offerings. Revenue for Community
Services activities was up nearly 10%. Participation also rose slightly.
The month of January began with a trip to the Rose Parade. Bus transportation
and grandstand seats were reserved for participants, enabling them to get an
excellent view of the fantastic Pasadena Rose Parade. Dan Linkhorn, a long-
time volunteer with the Community Services Department, was honored by District
Ten of the California Parks and Recreation Society for his outstanding
volunteer service at their annual banquet.
Ongoing during the month of January was the first-ever 3-man'basketball
league. The league consists of thirty-two 3-man basketball teams which play
half-court games at the Tustin High School gymnasium. Each team plays two
games on each Sunday. Plans currently call for a 5-man basketball league to
be added to the Community Services Department programs during the summer
months. Depending on gymnasium availability at local high schools, the league
will be offered on weekday evenings or weekend days. Winter league adult
softball had a record high of 70 teams participating. Revenue from the
program was up substantially from last year due to the 10 additional teams.
Good weather was a plus for the program and enabled games to be completed on
schedule with very few make-ups required.
An Evening of Dance was held at the Clifton C. Miller Community Center in
January. This special evening saw 95 people view a fantastic evening of dance
and choreography. Dance Kaleidoscope presents an Evening of Dance for the
City of Tustin each year. The event is looked forward to by members of the
community as one of two cultural events co-sponsored by the Community Services
Department.
February, the sweethearts month, began with the Rotary Club of Tustin's
Sweethearts' Luncheon for senior citizens. Over 260 guests gathered for the
Seventh Annual Sweethearts' Luncheon held in the Clifton C. Miller Community
Center. Each year for the last seven years, the Rotary Club has catered this
special Luncheon to honor senior citizens in the City of Tustin. This year's
Luncheon was a superb event which saw Rotarians and seniors get together for a
fun afternoon of entertainment and delicious food.
Also during the month of February, 125 seniors received assistance from
Isabelle McClements with tax forms. Each year, the Community Services

Department coordinates tax assistance for seniors in the City of Tustin. The
April Las Vegas trip filled in the month of February. Also announced was the
availability of an Alaska trip to be held at the end of summer.
Planning was begun for Easter week park programs during the month of
February. Parks will be open and supervised during the Easter week period.
special 40+ Tournament was organized during the month of February. Seven
teams participated in the Tournament which was very successful and well
received. The month of February was rounded out with a Whale Watching
excursion and a bus trip to Mammoth Mountain ski area. Each of these
excursions was well attended and will be offered again next year.
Senior tax assistance continued in the month of March. 223 seniors were
provided with assistance to help them fill out their tax return forms.
Isabelle McClements was able to attend the Western Gerontological Society
Conference in Anaheim during the month of March. This Conference brings
together aging and senior center professionals from throughout the western
states. This year's Conference was held in Anaheim; next year's will be held
in a different western city. Seniors also were offered a trip to Lake Tahoe
during the month of March. All spots for this June excursion were filled
during the month.
Planning for summer programs was completed during the month of March. Copy
for the summer brochure will be compiled and edited during the month and
forwarded for typesetting by Shorco Publishing in April. Brochures
publicizing summer programs will be available to the public during the month
of May.
Also during the month of March, a children's kite flying contest was held and
a free trial day for exercise programs was held at Lambert School. This
"Spring Fling" day allows new participants in exercise programs to determine
which class they prefer by experiencing short periods of each program.
A new program was added to class offerings during the month of March. For the
first time ever, Tustin residents will be able to learn how to sail. Using
Sabots through the City of Newport Beach's instructional program, Tustin
residents may sign up for sailing lessons which will be held at the Orange
Coast College Sailing Base in Newport Beach. This unique program is
coordinated in conjunction with the City of Newport Beach Recreation
Department and coordinated through the Community Services Department in
Tustin.
Each year, the California Parks and Recreation Society holds its annual
Conference during the month of March. This year's Conference was held in the

city of San Diego. The Conference offers valuable training experiences for
staff members. Educational seminars and programs are held each day of the
Conference. The theme for this year's Conference was "In Pursuit of
Excellence".
The Winter program was a very busy one as you can see. Staff of the Community
Services Department has worked hard to add new programs to each quarter's
schedule. The 1984 Winter quarter was a good example of this effort, with new
programs being added to the adult sports area and instructional classes.
