FALL 1983 QUARTERLY REPORT
The Fall Quarter includes'activities conducted in late September, October,
November and December. The Fall Quarter was very active this year with
several new programs initiated. Participation rose slightly as did revenues.
Profits, after expenses were deducted, also rose slightly in comparison to the
Fall 1982 quarter.
O~e of our largest special events of the year takes place each fall in the
month of October. Tustin Till er Days was a tremendous success with more
booths and ~paces rented than ever before. Cherrill Webb and the Tiller Days
Committee did a fantastic job of organizing the event again this year. Very
few problems were experienced and when minor ones came up, they were quickly
solved. The committee is al ready looking forward to next year's 'event with
planning meetings starting in January.
Also in October was .our first ever Halloween Haunted House program. This
joint effort with the Boy's Club of Tustin received a tremendous first year
response. Nearly 500 children and parents enjoyed the evenings program which
included a trip through the Haunted House, scary movies, games and goodie
bags. The standing room only response was a surprise for both the Community
Services Department Staff and the Boy's Club. Both agencies agreed that plans
for an even bigger crowd should be made for next year's event. Best of all,
the Halloween Haunt produced a slight profit for both the Boy's Club and the
City while only charging a $1 admission fee.
Senior Citizens had an active month in October highlighted by the Seventh
Annual Emeritus Day at Saddleback College. The program included a~
Fair, dances and exhibits. Tustin Senior's traveled to Carson City/Lake Tahoe
and to the Caribbean in October. Both trips were sold out successes. ?he
first flu clinic of the year was held at Tustin Community Hospital on October
18. Two hundred and thirty seven received vaccinations.
Fall Softball Leagues continued during October. Field rentals and tournament
use was heavy during the month bringing in a total of $1,508. Forty Plus
Softball Leagues were wrapped up this month and planning began for a three-man
basketball program.
During the month of November, plans were made for several Christmas Programs.
Preparations were also made for Winter session registration which began on
December 5. The rainy season began a little early this year with several
rain-outs experienced by Adult Softball teams.

The month was highlighted by a Thanksgiving Luncheon for senior citizens
hosted by the Church of Universal Harmony. The Foothill High School Choir
provided entertainment. It was a very nice luncheon and really put you in the
holiday spirit.
Supervisory staff attended the Mountain Workshop at Lake Arrowhead on
November 6 and 7. Lots of good information was presented and lots of
opportunities for sharing information with other professionals were
available. In addition to the Mountain Workshop, the entire department
attended a half day communication workshop with facilitator Bob Ash. Everyone
felt the training was a very positive experience which should improve
interpersonal communication and help develop improved team work.
The Postal Alert Program was officially started in November. News releases
and fliers were distributed to get the word out. So far the response has been
very slow. It may be that we are not reaching the frail elderly who really
need the program. Efforts to bring in more registrations will continue in the
months to come.
The new Facility Reservation and Rental Policies and Procedures were also
implemented in November. The system uses a master calendar for all facilities
and rentals. The process will be reviewed periodically with refinements made
along the way.
The youth Cross Country Meet held on December 17 had an extremely
disappointing turn out of only eight runners. Staff is examining the
possibility of intramural competition between Tustin Schools at the meet or
Boy's Club vs YMCA tj~pe of competitions to increase participation. If
attendance remains low the cross country program will be dropped.
Adult Softball Leagues were completed in mid-December when sunny weather
finally reappeared. Winter Leagues are scheduled to begin on January 16,
1984. A fourth game will be added to evening games at Columbus Tustin
allowing eight team leagues to be used for the Adult Softball Program. The
additional games should help accommodate more teams and bring in additional
revenue.

The Park Monitor Program'had an active vacation program. Several
mini-excursions were conducted along with crafts, games, special events and
visits from Santa Claus. Plans are being developed for a special one week
Easter Program in addition to a schedule of regular park activities.
Christmas was very successful again this year. Santa Suit rentals were very
profitable and the children's Christmas program attracted 75 active 7-12 year
olds. Everyone enjoyed the activities which included crafts, games and a
special performance by "Kids Are Music".
