STREET NANg CHANGE - WALNUT ST. BETWEEN NEWPORT AVE. AND ORANGE STREET
RE~ATION:
That the Tustin City Council, at their m~ettng of January 18, 1982, take no action
on changing the name of Walnut Street between N~wport Avenue and Orange Street.
BACg~Rou~:
Pursuant to the City Council's previous request, staff b.~ polled the residents of
Walnut Street between N~port Ave. and Orange St. regarding a suggested name
change to avoid potential confusion by the emergency service with Walnut Avenue
located southerly of the Santa Aha Freeway.
Nineteen (19) letters of inquiry were sent to the residents on Dec~mher 11, 1981.
T~o of these letters h~ve been returned as undeliver~ble. As of this dzte, eleven
(11) responses have ~cn received s~ud they are all he.rive to the proposed name
change. This represents 64.7% return on the poll.
Sram. of the cc~,~.nts on the responses ~re as follows:
1. Opposed to the change because of the unnecessary inconvenience to
correct records. For the past 20 years we have never had any
probl~,~ with police, fire or ambulance responding to energency
services.
2. Thanks, but no thanks.
3. We were here first.
4. We were the first Walnut, let the other one change its name.
5. When calling the police, we always say Walnut St. by 6th St. There
doesn't seem to be much of a problem.
6. Suggest that street and avenue be put on the street signs instead
of Just Walnut.
7. It would be very costly to change records and notify everyone.
8. It would cost $200.00 in materials for such a change, plus time.
In 1971, the City proposed a name change to this street and the ~Rjority of the
residents (then in the County) were also opposed to it at that time.
