RAISED REFLECTIVE PAVD~T NARKERS FOR FIRE HYDRANTS
(INH)RMATION REPORT)
At a previous Council meeting, it was requested that staff investigate the cost of
placing raised blue reflective pav~.~nt markers near the centerline of the street
and opposite fire hydrants to provide ~mproved hydrant visibility.
There are approximately 1000 fire hydrants within the City limits. The cost for
1000 raised double-faced blue reflective pavement markers is $2,050.00.
Contractual labor for installing these buttons is $2,500.00/1000 units. The total
cost for these pavement markers would be as follows:
Reflective ~arkers ....... $2,050.00
6~ Sales Tax .......... 123.00
$2,173. O0
Contractual Labor . . 2,500.00
Total Estimated Cost . . $4,673.00
The need for contractual labor stems fr~n the mixing of the epoxy utilized in
attaching the marker to the pavement surface. The problem is mixing the epoxy for
just one marker at a ti~e and then driving to the next location and mixing a ne~
batch, which is not a tim~ efficient operation. Most contractors have a machine
that mixes a determined .mount of epoxy for one marker at a time in only a fe~
seconds.
Currently, the City hasbudgeted$40,000.00 in Account F2912 for siEningand
striping during the 1981-82 fiscal year. If adequate funding remains in this
account in June, 1982, it is suggested that these markers be installed at that
time. In the event funding is insufficient during this current year, it is then
suggested that this work be included in the 1982-83 Signing and Striping Budget.
