~TE: February 23, 1982 Inter-Corn
TO: Bill Huston, City Manager ~~,~~
FROM: Royleen A. White, Director of Co,unity Services
SUBJECT: NOMINATION OF RUBY MAY TO VOTING MEMBERSHIP ON O~NGE COUNTY SENIOR
CITIZENS ADVISORY COUNCIL
RECOMMENDATIONS:
To direct staff to prepare a letter to the Orange County Division, League
of Cities, recommending Ruby May as a voting member to the Orange County
Senior Citizens Advisory Council.
2. To authorize the Mayor to sign this letter.
3. To authorize and encourage Council members to voice their support for Mrs.
May to appropriate League officials.
BACKGROUND:
A voting membership on the Orange County Senior Citizen Advisory Council has become
available. At present, the City is fortunate to have Tustin resident Ruby May as
an alternate delegate to this Council; however as an alternate Mrs. May does not
have a vote. If she were a voting member, Mrs. May would have the interest of
Tustin senior adults in mind as the Advisory Council considers projects to be
funded from county, state, and federal funds. The Orange County Senior Citizens
Advisory Council is most instrumental in dispersing these funds.
Ruby May is involved in many facet~of our senior citizen service program, as can
be evidenced by the attached resume. In addition to serving as an alternate
delegate to the Orange County Senior Citizens Advisory Council, she serves on the
City of Tustin's Senior Citizen Coordinating Council. Since the group began in
November of 1980, staff has had an opportunity to witness Ruby in action. She is
conscientious, hardworking, very interested in meeting the needs of our seniors,
and always willing to give her time. In April of 1981 Ruby was a delegate to the
State House Conference on Aging, and in 1981 she was also elected to the California
Senior Legislature as an Assemblywoman.
Due to the fact that Ruby May has had experience on the Orange County Senior
Citizens Advisory Council as an alternate delegate, she has an excellent chance
to be appointed as a voting member. The appropriate method for the City to
proceed is to nominate Mrs. May in a letter to Executive Director Bob Haskell,
Orange County Division, California League of Cities. Should the City Council
concur with staff's feeling that Ruby May would make an excellent voting delegate,
staff would be delighted to prepare such a letter for the Mayor's signature.
There is another candidate from the City of Irvine who will be competing for the
same spot for which Mrs. May is eligible; therefore, any support from City
Council to the League Office or members of the appropriate League Committee would
be appreciated.
