I_ k DATE: TO: FROM: S UBJ EC:T: MARCH 29, 1982 NEW BUSINESS No. 1 4-19-82 nter - C om BILL ~USTON, CITY MANAGER HUGH WEST, MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT REQUEST FOR TREE REMOVAL RECOMMENDATION: I recommend that the trees be removed as requested by the Marcinkevicz's and that the trees be replaced with a type selected by them from the City-approved tree list. REASONS: Mr. & Mrs. Marcinkevicz, of 13602 Malena Drive, have requested the City remove the two large Palm trees in the parkway in front of their residence; one on each side of the driveway. They state that the trees are up in the street light electrical wires and they are concerned that this could cause a fire in the tops of the trees. They also seem to be a haven for rats, which have been seen in the trees. BACKGROUND: The Palm tree heads have reached a height of the street light wires and have put quite a bit of stress on the wires. All the slack between the street light standards has been taken up. Palm trees, unlike other types of trees, cannot be topped to keep them below the wire height. When you cut the head from a Palm, the tree dies. The danger of fire in Palm trees is always present and certainly with electrical wires rubbing against the fronds, that could wear through the insulation causing them to arc and in all probability would cause a fire. Letters of inquiry have been sent to the neighbors within the immediate area and no response has been received. HUGH WEST MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT dh cc: B.
