BACKGtlDUND: During the past few months, Mrs. Gallacher has been c~',a',%dnicating with the City staff regarding the removal of a Ficus tree that is allegedly destroying the plumbing at their residence located at 17382 Parker Drive. The tree in question was planted in the mid 1960's and has a trunk diameter of approximately 12 inches. A review of the original street improvement drawings for that development does not delineate the exact location of the sewer lateral. In July of 1978, the City Council approved a tree removal/replacement policy as follows: Priority I - Problem tree causing present or future damage to curbs or sidewalks. Under this priority, the City would remove and replace the problem tree with a 15 gal. sized tree at City expense. Priority II - Undesireable tree due to extensive litter or other problems. Under this priority, City would remove the tree at City expense and replacement of tree at full cost to the property owner for City labor and all material cost. Priority III - Unapproved tree (not of a problem or undesireable species). City removal and replacement at full cost to the property owner. DISCUSSICN: It appears that this tree would fall under a modified version of Priority I in that damage is being caused to the sewer lateral in lieu of sidewalks/curbs. Apparently when the trees in this development were planted during the mid 1960's, the locations of the sewer laterals were not coordinated with the tree plantings, It is my feeling that the tree could certainly be interfering with the sewer lateral and that the existing TREE R~I~OV~ - 17382 PARKER DRIVE MAY 12, 1982 PAGE ~WNO (FILE #2695) tree should be removed and the st~,~p ground down to belc~ the ground surface to eliminate any future growth. A replacement tree (15 gal.) should be planted if there is adequate space within the parkway so as not to interfere with the sewer lateral. Priority I should also be revised to include sewer laterals as well as curbs and sidewalks. BOB LEDENDECKER DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC ~DI~KS/ CITY ENGINEER db
