PAVING OF NARROW NECK CENTER MEDIANS WITH STAMPED (EMBOSSED) CONCRETE
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council, at their meeting of July 19, 1982,
direct staff as to which narrow neck center medians they would like to have paved
with stamped concrete in conjunction with the Irvine Blvd. FAU Project.
BACKGROUND:
The City Council directed staff to prepare quantity estimates for removing
landscaping/dichondra in all of the narrow neck center medians throughout the City
and, when bids for the Irvine Blvd. FAU Project were opened, determine costs
involved based on the stamped concrete low bid unit price for the Irvine Blvd.
project.
DISCUSSION:
We have categorized locations for paving of narrow necks into suggested priorities
"A" thru "J". The "snake" type median on Irvine Blvd. between Yorba & Mtn. View
was given priority "A", since it has always been our intention to pave this median
in conjunction with the Irvine Blvd. FAU Project.
Priority "B" has been assigned to the remaining necks on Irvine Blvd. because it
was felt by paving these, they would blend in more favorably with the new stamped
concrete medians between Prospect and Newport to be constructed under the FAU
Project.
Priority "C" was assigned to 17th St. because it was felt that the high volun{e of
high speed traffic here makes maintenance of these narrow necks very dangerous.
Priorities "D" and "E" were assigned to Red Hill Avenue for the same reason as
priority "C" above.
Priority "F" was assigned to the entire median island that was recently
constructed on Bryan Avenue easterly from Browning Avenue, due to the fact that
this median sits on top of a reinforced concrete box culvert and has only 1' of
cover; thus it will never be possible to landscape this median.
The relatively low priorities of "G" and "H" have been assigned to the First
Street median necks because these are the widest (up to 5' wide) necks in the City
and are less of a maintenance problem.
Tabulated below are the various locations giving the total cost for each segment.
These costs are based on City crews doing all of the work involved in killing and
removal of the irrigation systems in each neck:
