Staff was requested to review the concern and respond back to the Agency. DISCUSSION: The only type of temporary sidewalk that staff feels would be practical during the construction of E1Camino Real and Main St. would be a portable plywood-type of sidewalk that could be re-used/relocated through each phase of the project. As indicated in the attached memo, the preliminary estimated cost for this type of facility is $30,000.00. This type of temporary facility would have to be removed periodically as indicated in the example in the attached memo. An alternate to this temporary facility would be to provide an area longitudinal to the street approximately four feet wide and adjacent to the property line for pedestrian access. This area would be disrupted at times during the course of construction, but should provide a relatively safe access for pedestrians during the majority of the construction time. BOB LED(NDECKER DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/ CITY ENGINEER db Attachment DATE: TO: FROH: S UBJ ECT: AUGUST 17, 1982 Inter-Corn BOB LEDENDECKER, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/CITY ENGINEER DALE WICK, ASSISTANT CITY ENGINEER EL CAMINO REAL/MAIN STREET IMPROVEMENTS PROVISION FOR TEMPORARY SIDEWALK I received a tentative cost from the contractor for providing a temporary longitudinal plywood sidewalk of $20.00 per lineal foot. Approximately 1500 L.F. would be required for each construction phase for a total cost of approximately $30,000.00. There are approximately three more construction phases which would require this sidewalk and the contractor estimates an additional week for each phase for placing and/or moving this sidewalk, which would delay the completion date to about Dec. 17, 1982 (plus any rain days which may occur). The temporary sidewalk could only be left in place for a very short period, since after the curb is poured most of it would have to be removed to allow for work as follows: (1) Installation of longitudinal landscape conduits. (2) Installation of footings for benches, kiosks, and other hardscape items. (3) Preparation of subgrade for concrete sidewalk pour. For example, in the current construction phase, work began on removals Aug. 2, 1982. Following would have been the sequence of events in providing a temporary sidewalk: (1) Begin removals - Aug. 2, 1982 (2) Complete removals - Aug. 13, 1982 (3) Begin placing temporary sidewalk - Aug. 13, 1982 (4) Complete placing temporary sidewalk - Aug. 18, 1982 (5) Complete pouring of curb & gutter - Aug. 20, 1982 (6) Begin work on items behind curb requiring removal of temporary sidewalk to facilitate construction - Aug. 23, 1982 DALE WICK ASSISTANT CITY ENGINEER db
