Authorization to relocate and raise a freeway identification
(pole) sign from forty-five (45) feet to sixty (60) feet
BACKGROUND & DISCUSSION
On December 13, 1976, the Planning Commission approved Use Permit 76-31
which authorized a forty-five (45) foot freeway pole with with an area of
eighty-five (85) square feet. Other actions which all~ed e~pansion of the
motel and were approved by the Planning Agency were: Use Permit 80-5, Use
Permit 80-16 and Amendment to Use Permit 80-16.
On December 3, 1981, Use Permit 81-32 was approved by the Zoning
Administrator which authorized the construction of the final ten (10) units
of the motel expansion. One of the conditions of this approval was that
the relocation of the existing freeway sign would have to be a public
hearing before the Planning Agency. (The present pole sign is situated
where one of the new units will be placed.)
The applicant has submitted a justifiation for raising the sign to sixty
(60) feet (see enclosed). ~
Staff feels that the height of the sign is not a significant issue because
there are several freeway pole signs (for service stations) that are in
excess of sixty (60) feet and are located much closer to the freeway than
the Tustin Motor Lodge.
RECOt~IENDED ACTI~
Approve Use Permit 82-24 by the adoption of Resolution No. 2058.

RE:
Electrical signage for TUSTIN MOTOR LODGE
750 E1 Camino Real
Tustin, Ca.
Dear Sirs,
The following is a request for permission to re-locate amd
raise the height of our existing free standing electrical sign
display.
It is to be re-located in the planter area, (please note the
building plans submitted), 15 feet south of the property line and
centered between the parking lot on the east side and the property
line on the west side.
At the present time, the sign is 45 feet high, however, when
re-located it will not be visable to the south bound travelers on
Interstate 5.
Enclosed are photos taken 3/10 of one mile north of the Newport
Avenue off ramp traveling south on I-5 of a 4 foot by 8 foot plywood
panel suspended at 60 ft. and 55 ft. over the proposed sign location.
As you can see from these photos the panel seems much smaller in the
air than it would up close. In taking these photos I've determined
that 3/10 of one mile would allow a south bound traveler to see the
display, then make a committment to the Mewpor~ Avenue off ramp
safely, without creating a trmffic safety problem.
I feel the photos indicate that 60 feet would be.the i~eal
height.
As you are no doubt aware, the motel and lodging business is
a semi-impulse decision business depending very heavily upon the
sign display for it's primary source of advertizment, and no~ having
a ~raadable display would crea~e and extreme and in fact critical
financial hardship financially.
The sign will have no action or annimation.
Our main objective is simply to insure the success for the
Tustin Motor Lodge and your help in this request is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely yours,
/TUSTIN MOTOR L~mDGE
