If the attached resolution is passed and adopted, it is requested that fifty (50) feet of red zoning be authorized at the southwesterly and northwesterly corners of the intersection for visibility and that two additional signs be installed on a raised island in the center of Main St. for both directions of travel. BACKGROUND: On October 20, 1982, the City Council approved the installation of stop signs on Main Street at the intersection of "B" Street. At that time, the staff recommended against the installation'of stop signs because the intersection did not meet the Standard Warrants for a 4-way stop control for either warrant #1, #2, or 3b. Warrant 3 must be met in both areas 3a and 3b. DISCUSSION: The subject intersection has been reviewed with respect to visibility and stop sign location. It has been determined that the eastbound motorists will have difficulty in seeing the proposed stop sign at the southwesterly corner of Main and "B" Streets due to the existence of a large tree in front of 320 West First St. Consequently, it is suggested that additional stop signs be installed in the center of Main Street for both directions of travel. These additional signs would be mounted on an asphaltic concrete island similar to the ones located at Walnut and Oxford Avenues adjacent to Tustin Meadows. In addition to the extra signs, two curb areas adjacent to the signs located behind curb should be red zoned for a distance of fifty (50) feet easterly and westerly of the curb returns. These red zones will eliminate two on-street parking spaces in front of 320 West Main St. on the southwesterly corner and two on-street parking spaces in front of 225 West Main St. at the northeasterly corner. The stop signs will most likely induce two lanes of traffic for each direction at the intersection and may require some future modifications to the striping along Main Street both easterly and westerly of "B" Street. INSTALLATION OF STOP SIGNS ON MAIN STREET AT "B" STREET OCTOBER 26, 1982 PAGE TWO The attached resolution designates the placement of certain stop signs at the intersection of Main and "B" Street and requires adoption so that traffic enforcement at this intersection can be implemented.
