SUBJECT: Request for Parkway Tree Removal
Recommendation:
That the City Council approve the removal of 3 large Pine trees at
13752 Malena Drive and that only 2 of the 3 trees be replaced with
15 gallon size Carrottwood trees.
Background:
Staff has received a letter from the property owner requesting the City
remove 3 large Pine trees in the parkway adjacent to his property at
13752 Malena Drive. (copy attached)
The reason given is the continous dropping of the needles that go
in the back yard into the pool plugging up the filters, resulting in
considerable expense plu,s the continous labor problem of trying to
keep his pool and back yard clean.
Discussion:
The 3 large Pine trees are approximately 30 to 35 feet tall and the
amount of needles dropped is making a real mess of Mr. Hoyt's swimming
pool area. Damage has been done to the sidewalk and it was replaced
a year ago. The parkway is an unsightly mess because of needles and
a raise in grade from the large trees plus the shade; nothing in the
way of ground cover will grow.
Mr. Hoyt has chosen a Carrottwood tree as a replacement tree.
Notification was sent to surrounding neighbors, one objection was
received.

Dear Sir:
Please be advised that I urgently request that 3 Pine
trees be removed along Anglin, (along our boulevard locate~f
on the corner of Anglin and Malena), because of the following
reasons:
1. Pine
A.
needles falling daily year round causing
Plugging up of our swimming pool's filter
system. Much time and money we have spent
because of this.
The boulevard looks terrible. It is constantly
dirty because of the trees. We can't grow
grass or flowers or any ground cover under
these trees because the pine needles kill
everything.
The back yard and pool always need cleaning
because of dirty needles from trees constantly
dropping.
2. Sidewalk and curb has already been replaced because
of cracks from tree roots.
Trees themselves look in bad condition. One is very
tilted towards our house. Hopefully a bad wind storm
would not blow it over.
The neighbors would appreciate the improvement from the re-
moval as well as, I would guess, the street cleaners. These
trees produce a real mess! They could be replaced with the
same kind of trees that are on Anglin Lane.
Your immediate approval to this matter will be greatfully
appreciated.
Thanking you in advance, I remain,
Very truly yours,
Richard M. Hoyt

Dear Homeowner:
The City of Tustin wishes to inform you that one of your
neighobors, Richard M. Hoyt of 13752 Malaria Drive, Tustin
has requested the City to remove 3 trees from in front
of his property.
Since the removal of these trees would effect the environment
in which you live, we solicit your comments.
If you object to the removal please respond in writing within
ten days of receipt of this letter. If we have not heard from
you in that time we will assume you have no objections to the
trees removal.
Sincerely,
Maintenance Superintendent
Dear Mr. West,
In response to your letter regarding the removal
of all three trees on Anglin Drive, we, as homeowners in
the area feel that it is unnecessary to take the three
trees out as it looks too bare already. Malena Drive has
had the majority of trees removed in the past few years
and have had no replacements thereof and the street
certainly doesn't look as attractive as it did several
years ago, due to thislneglect ...... especially in comparison
to Wheeler Street. We~say, lets leave a few of the trees,
take one or two, if necessary, but all three??? NO NO NO
