CONSENT CALENDAR
No. 8

Inter-Corn
TO: WILLIAM HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
FROM: BOB LEDENDECKER, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/CITY ENGINEER
SUmJECT: REQUEST FOR TREE REMOVAL
410 PACIFIC STREET - 620 W. MAIN ST.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Tustin City Council, at their meeting of July 18, 1983,
deny the request for the removal of four Ficu.s trees at 410
Pacific St. and 620 W. Main St. and direct staff to remove tree
roots and trim foliage as required.
BACKGROUND:
Staff has received a request from Mr. Bill Brown for the removal
four Ficus trees as follows:
Two trees adjacent to 410 Pacific St.
Two trees adjacent to 620 Main St.
Mr, Brown owns both of these parcels of land and has indic'ated
that the surface roots of these trees are making it very
difficult to maintain the parkway turf and the trees adjacent to
620 Main St. are starting to displace the sidewalk.
DISCUSSION:
Staff has reviewed Mr. Brown's request and found the roots of
these trees to be on the ground surface and competing with the
turf for water and sunlight. Also, a portion of the sidewalk
adjacent to 620 W. Main St. is starting to be displaced.
Per current City policy and'on June 7, 1983, staff sent letters'
to twenty-four (24) property owners within the immediate
neighborhood soliciting their objections., if any, to the removal
of said trees. As of this date, staff has received written
replies from three residents objecting to the tree removals and
one verbal reply objecting to the removal.
As an alternate to removing these trees, it is suggested that the
surface roots be removed by cutting and grinding of same to a
depth of 6 inches. Prior to this root removal, the foliage
should be trimmed and thinned to accomodate this root removal and
provide a .balance to the tree.
