HomeMy WebLinkAboutCITIZEN LETTER 07-18-83July 15, 1983 Mr. Bob Ledendecker, City Engineer City of Tustin 300 Centennial Way Tustin, California 92680 Dear Mr. Ledendecker, There have been numerous problems in the area of our neighbor- hood for quite some time concerning the issue of Yorba Street between Irvine Blvd. and 17th Street. Over the past 10 to 15 years the increased traffic, noise, safety hazards, difficulty in accessing Yorba and excess speed have dramatically decreased the quality of life for the residents in the area. We are a coalition of approximately 200 residents in the area that have suffered the loss of tranquility in our own homes due to the noise factor, and the loss of convenience and safety in getting to and from those homes; not to mention, the loss of property value due to the negative impact of the conditions on Yorba Street. With the "old issue" again before the Council about on-street parking, the community is once more reminded of the conditions that already exist because Yorba Street was designated a sec- ondary arterial highway. Yorba Street between Irvine Blvd. and 17th Street is 8/10 of a mile long, situated parallel and to the east of the 55 Freeway at a distance of less than 500 feet, through an area that is 70% residential. Within a distance of 1/3 mile lies a primary high- way, Tustin Avenue; a state highway, the 55 Freeway; and a sec- ondary highway, Yorba Street. To have designated Yorba Street as a secondary arterial HIGHWAY, thereby inviting traffic that should be on the freeway, was unconscionable. For the above mentioned reasons, we are requesting that: 1) The Secondary Arterial Highway designation be removed from Yorba Street; 2) That all on-street parking be removed between Irvine Blvd. and 17th Street during business hours; and 3) That there be only one lane of traffic each way, bike lanes on each side and landscaped, center dividers with left-turn pockets. July 15, 1983 Mr. Bob Ledendecker Page Two Other suggestions offered by the residents are as follows: -Crosswalks, · Continuous left-turn lane, 'Signals, 'Stop signs, · Sound-absorbing asphalt, · No large trucks allowed, -Radar controlled speed limit, · More posted speed limit signs, · City request that UPS use Tustin Avenue, · No left-turns allowed onto Yorba from Irvine Blvd. or 17th Street, · Block Yorba with a cul-de-sac parkway north of the business area at Irvine Blvd. It is imperative that our city representatives recognize the magnitude of our intent to solve these existing problems, while not permitting further violation of our personal and civil rights. Any or all of us will be pleased to meet with you at your earliest convenience. Sincerely,.
