Police Vehicle Replacement
Recommendtion:
Council authorize purchase of four Chevrolet Malibus to replace
the older, high mileage units in our patrol fleet, at a cost of
$36,197.54 (includes tax).
Background:
Patrol Unit* Replacement.
Money was budgeted in our Fiscal Year 82-83 budget for replacement
of six patrol vehicles at an estimated cost of $60,000. Review of
the patrol fleet's mileage and service history indicates that
there are two 1980 Malibus that currently have approximately
60,000 miles, and two 1981 Malibus that will have approximately
60,000. miles by mid-calgndar year, when replacement actually
· occurs. These four units need replacement.. The mileage on the
remainder of the 1981Malibus (fgur) is sufficiently low to allow
for another year of cost effective service life.
Los Angeles County and the California Highway Patrol conducted a
bid process and pursuant to this bid process, vehicle
evaluations. Based on the results of these evaluations, the
California Highway Patrol has selected the Dodge Diplomats as
their fleet ~'vehicles for 1983. Los Angeles has selected the
Chevrolet Malibus. Review of the specifications and performance
testing indicates that either unit would be suitable for our use.
Cost breakdown for each vehicle is as follows:
Base Price
including Tustin
P.D. options
Chevrolet Malibu
$8,457.37
Dodge Diplomat
$8,762.89
I recommend we purchase the Chevrolet Malibus this year. This
recommendation is made for the following reasons:
1. Cost of initial purchase.

Police Vehicle Replacement

2. Cost of conversion.
The equipment already being utilized in the existing Malibus
can be transferred to the new units, negating the need and
cost of purchasing new equipment (i.e. push bars, cages,
etc.)'
3. Ease of maintenance and repair.
The vehicle maintenance staff is knowledgeable in the
maintenance and repair of the Chevrolet. Parts are on hand
for these vehicles. Familiarization with a new vehicle and
acquisition of a new parts supply will not be necessary.
4. No current need for a full size patrol car.
Of the fourteen cars in our patrol fleet, six are full size
Chevrolet Impalas. This will allow us to continue to furnish
to our taller officers, vehicles in which they may
comfortably complete their duty tour.
Los Angeles County has awarded the bid to the dealership of
Maurice J'. .Sopp and. Son, 5801 Pacific Boulev-ard, Huntingt~ Park,
California. Costs are FOB Huntington Park. Deliver'y from
Huntington Park to ci'ty yard would be accomplished by city
personnel.
